Why We Do What We Do
The country’s poverty levels have increased sharply over the past five years with an additional 3 million people now classified as living in absolute poverty. This means about 34 million people from a population of 55 million lack basic necessities like housing, transport, food, heating and proper clothing.
Much of the commentary on these sad statistics has emphasised the poor performance of urban job creation efforts and the country’s education system. Little has been said about the role of rural development or land reform. This is a major omission given that about 35% of South Africa’s population live in rural areas. They are among the worst affected by the rising poverty levels.
The rural world is changing rapidly, and young people need to be prepared to rise to the new opportunities. Agriculture is also changing, with new technologies, products, markets, and business environments. And many rural people will need to become engaged in nonfarm activities or migrate to urban areas. To seize these opportunities, all will need skills that differ from those of their parents—but education and training systems are not ready to face this challenge.
1Across the developing world, the challenge of providing appropriate education and relevant skills to rural youth needs to be met—it is necessary to provide a basic education that motivates them to study, training to give them skills for the labour market, and opportunities for some to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.
Education Orientation
Considering the specific needs of each trainee, the learning environment is acutely sensitive to the individual differences among the learners, including their prior knowledge3.
Prior knowledge is one of the most important resources on which to build current learning as well as one of the most marked individual difference among learners3.
Our role is to mentor on the principle of theory and practice, namely to give the professional direction and allow the trainees to reflect on their professional projects, thus developing their creativity, autonomy and to value their newly acquired skills. The aim is to train the youth and adults so that on completion learners are ready to hit the ground running.
It is therefore important to understand the meaning contained in the communication of management, colleagues, and external partners using our information systems approach.
Depending on the trainees’ degree of competence and to allow for a didactic approach, we will create as best as possible, groups with different competences, through a screening process, so that they may have the opportunity to contribute to each other’s knowledge acquisition.
As a result, this will create a synergy that promotes the exchange of knowledge and teamwork. These professional key skills are necessary in a company’s work environment.
